10th ANNUAL OCCTA TENNIS SEMINAR

August 15, 2021
When Steve Riggs calls, a lot of tennis professionals come a long way to be part of his annual Tennis Seminar event in Orange County, California. While the event wasn't held in 2020 for obvious reasons, it moved this year to the beautiful Marguerite Tennis Pavilion in Mission Viejo and had a total of 98 participants. USPTA and PTR tennis professionals from as far as Tucson, Arizona (Amanda Fink), many from San Diego, Malibu, and up to San Jose (Ken DeHart) came for a day of learning and sharing.
Marguerite Tennis Pavilion was voted PTR Public Facility of the Year in 2018. The facility is considered outstanding in many ways. Their SNAP (Special Needs Adaptive Program) initiatives are very successful in reaching out to another tennis segment by working with ACEing Autism to provide free clinics to children with autism. The city is also partnering with the USTA and Angel City Sports to offer free wheelchair and adaptive tennis clinics.
I was able to watch some exciting demonstrations like the one below where Dina McBride (white hat) teamed up with Amy Pazahanick (Agape Tennis Academy) to demonstrate "Creating and Maintaining Ladies Groups." It was quite amazing watching the powerful groundstrokes by Amy and the clever doubles tips by Dina.

Dina's daughter Jordyn is a decorated varsity tennis player at West Ranch High School where she was undefeated in league matches all four years.

Jordyn is a freshman on the women's team at the University of San Diego under the same coach her mother played for many years ago: Sherri Stevens.

Evan Parry, Director of Tennis at Andulka Park Tennis Center in Riverside, California, gave "Tips to Help Your Students Spacing."
Another great mother-daughter team was Karen Ronney and her daughter Brooke. Mama Karen is an award-winning national coach, author, speaker, mentor, and marketing specialist. She is currently the Social Media and Marketing Manager for the Southern California Tennis Association (SCTA) Foundation. Brooke Ronney is a tennis pro teaching in the San Diego area. She was an NCAA scholarship athlete at Albright College and today she blends her passion and expertise in two worlds: Tennis and Yoga.

Brooke Ronney's demo was called "Yoga to Extend Your Teaching Career."
Steve Riggs and ITA Hall of Famer, USPTA Elite Coach Dave Borelli, the Community Service Supervisor for the City of Mission Viejo, put an exciting 1-day program together. A very high-quality field of speakers made it happen. Everyone is looking forward to no. 11 in 2022!
