TENNIS INDUSTRY
November 28, 2022 (This one fell through the cracks, sorry)

Rich,

I was in a Dicks Sporting Goods today and decided to look at the tennis area. They had about 40 tennis racquets on display. I think most of them cost less than $75. One or two were over $100. There were about 45 pickleball paddles. Most were priced at $89 or $99 and three or four were $149.

Is it a good sign that Dick's is selling tennis rackets that are cheaper than a pickleball paddle? That assumes that the cheap tennis racquets are selling. It could also mean that the expensive tennis racquets have sold first and the cheapos are sitting on the shelf. Or it could mean that Dick's staff that is in charge of merchandise is clueless. I just looked - their annual sales are $9.5 billion. They must know something about retailing.
If they are selling $90 to $100 pickleball paddles, does that mean that pickleball players are willing to pay more for a beginning paddle than beginning tennis players pay for a tennis racquet?

Rich,
Great newsletter this time. Lots of information on a number of areas in tennis.
We just moved from NorCal to Durham, NC, and are experiencing tennis in this area. I am still coaching while my wife is playing local league tennis. My wife signed up for a USTA league and was pleasantly surprised that the fee was only $13.50 for a 50+ senior league and $20.00 for the regular adult league while in NorCal the fee was $25-$35 depending on the league. Have you done any research on league fees in all the USTA sections? Just wondering why league fees are different in the sections. Maybe the continued increase in fees is why some people are opting out of league play and tennis numbers are dropping.
Your Tennis Channel write-up is interesting. Considering the poor coverage from ESPN and TC of the Australian Open I can see why viewership is down. My wife and I just finished trying to watch the Australian Open tournament. Coverage on ESPN was inconsistent and college basketball took precedence over tennis matches. I get that, but then TC should be allowed to get the feed and show the matches. That didn't happen as they kept showing repeats of old tournaments. I know ESPN buys the rights to show the AO but then they don't show it and won't let TC get the feed.
Watching pro tennis gets people excited about playing and creates buzz around a tennis club/facility. However, if you can't watch live matches or it gets too difficult to find a channel then people get turned off. I know you probably remember that we used to be able to go online to a Slam's website like the AO and pull up a court and watch a match. That isn't the case anymore and the sports channels we are offered "cover" the tournament, but only at their convenience.
Good to know all is well on your end.

Rich,
Greetings from Colorado.
Thank goodness for the mute button...used whenever Haber begins his pompous proclamations and questions. He really is the worst ever. Surely, Bud Collins and Tony Trabert wince in heaven at Brett and pray for someone more relatable and less holier than thou.
The TC coverage of The Aussie Open was more scatterbrained than ever....viewers enthralled with great first sets (Azarenka vs. Rybakina) only to be shown the post-match interview after a commercial break. The same thing occurred in The Khachanov/ Tsitsipas semifinal following a riveting third-set tiebreaker. C’mon people...hire an executive producer who is on the ball.
Btw...their featuring of Pickleball in prime time would be similar to The Golf Channel airing Frisbee Golf tournaments...which, in fifty years, will never happen.
You think Major League Baseball would ever tarnish their brand by featuring weekly whiffle ball games?
Not going to happen.
It’s a shame as the tennis being played is mind-boggling but the coverage is horrific.
Signing off in Colorado,

Re: Morning Consult Sports: DraftKings Lays Off 140 Employees

Rich,

Given past discussions about betting in tennis, I think this is interesting. Is DraftKings having problems? Have consumers cut back on betting for fears of the recession?
To your point, if somebody farts on a pickleball court it gets positive media coverage.
There are so many great stories in tennis. Why aren't they covered?
The media focused on Giorgi's allegedly fake COVID papers, Djokovic's father's presence at the tournament, banning the Russian flag at AO, the news by Svitolina and others to ban Russian and Belarussian players from the Olympics, the ballboy controversy at AO, Djokovic's mystery drink at AO.
If you go to Google Trends and type in tennis for the U.S. the AO was a tiny blip.
This is very sad. Why doesn't tennis get better coverage?

Don was one of a kind; met him in the '80s through great pro/friend Jak Beardsworth. My Florida Academy traveled to California and we played Don's kids for a few days on the swing. Special, special man!

Rich,
I saw a link somewhere that said, "How to fill out the USTA Coaches profile" I'm sure this has been around for a while, but I looked at it.
https://customercare.usta.com/hc/en-us/articles/360041937891-How-to-Complete-the-Coach-Profile
Because I am in Net Generation I am in the database.
It appears that the only criteria for being a USTA Coach are that you complete Safe Play, the background check, and you self-affiliate with a facility. There is a gentleman who claims to be affiliated with a summer club, but he does not show up on their website.
The fact that there are USPTA pros in there who signed up because of Net Generation and the fact that the coaches have to be assigned to a facility gives them instant credibility. I signed up for a two-court park facility near my house.
Who needs the USPTA and PTR?

Rich,

As a volunteer over the past many years, I am extremely concerned about the USTA at the Section and National Levels.
National doesn't seem to understand what is at the Grassroots Level and way too many individuals on the National Campus who have never served, volunteered or had to run events, programming, lessons, etc. at the most basic levels.

Terms related to the Southern Section Level, Leadership seems to be off to a very rocky start for the new Executive Director, Matt Olson, replacing John Callen. Lack of vision, a poor start financially, and lack of communication all seem to be a weakness of the new Executive Director.
Hopes are, that a 180-degree turn can happen and the long history of success USTA Southern and National Levels will return to everything USTA.

Re: USTA's Tennis & Pickleball Summit in Orlando

Rich,

An interesting crowd was in attendance. They had three people from Intermountain and two from Southwest USTA. Two small divisions, certainly not representative of the industry. It looked like more of a Summit with the USTA people, not the industry. Interesting that USPTA was not there.
It seems like they weren't sure about their participation numbers for PB.
They proclaimed that PB is a trend, not a fad. Interesting comment. That might be a fun polling question.
There seems to be a fad - build a couple of courts (PB or padel) add a bar and possibly a golf simulator and you have a viable business. That is a different model for a business.
One of the things I took away from a recent USPTA business conference was that PB is making the same mistakes tennis made during their boom years of the 80s. Bend your knees, $50, please. Greed. Not qualified instructors.
PB is easier to learn. You can't milk a player for lessons like you can in tennis as you take from 2.5 to 3.0 to 3.5 to 4.0 over 6 to 8 years and then slowly keep them engaged as they move from 4.0 to 3.5 to 3.0 on the way down. Right now the culture of PB is friendly - people play with anybody. Will that continue in the future? PB is probably more fun to play than watch. Will padel overtake PB?
We will see.

Re: USTA's Tennis & Pickleball Summit in Orlando

Rich,

It’s interesting for me, because of almost everything they are saying to do, I did 8 years ago, which was first to convert two of my singles courts, one mostly used for coaching and the other for the ball machine, to temp pickleball courts with portable nets. We then could use those courts for very young children, 4 to 6 yrs. old. Also, I knew that they would get bored with pickleball and move into tennis.
The two things they don’t mention are that pickleball people love the social part, have little interest in leagues or competition, and second, the reason so many got into the sport was due to injuries or loss of movement…F.Y.I. that usually doesn’t bide well for the ongoing growth of a sport.

Rich,

Well, here's some tennis news.
USPTA members get 15% off retail prices. Is that a benefit?
Embree can't sell USPTA certifications/memberships, so he has to sell advertising to fill his 20 pages in RSI. What a joke!

Rich,

USPTA has a speaker series for ICL academy, presumably because the focus of the USPTA is on world-class elite players rather than Joe Sixpack and his wife Susie who are 3.5 players at the Lost Backhand Country Club. The presentations might have high entertainment value, but may not be relevant for pros and their clientele.

THREE-QUESTION SURVEY FOR MARCH 2023
QUESTION
How confident are you in the leadership and board of directors of the USTA?

COMMENTS
-
USTA should promote tennis! NOT pickleball!. Pickleball does 2 things to tennis, 1 it takes converts tennis courts, 2 it takes tennis players. DONE
-
Too focused on the Open and the cash.
-
too much money in wrong direction
-
I believe there’s new younger board members that offer fresh new ideas
-
They continually promote (not always intentionally) tennis as an elitist sport. They miss the boat for tennis as something for everyone. The sponsors they select, ticket prices, tournament costs, all say that this sport takes money. The people who will buy Rolex and Polo , and fly Emirates airline seem to be their only target market.
-
Dr. Hainline is a visionary leader. Alan Schwartz helped get the USTA on solid financial footing by increasing the revenue opportunities at the US Open. Dr. Hainline is similary a game changer with health, wellness and promoting sportsmanship.
-
USTA Admin. Salaries are too high. Who regulates salaries for sectional employees?
-
I don't think they have growing the game as their top priority.
-
Brian Hainline may be able to accomplish something as he is a tennis person.
-
Can’t implement anything
-
Dedicated and passionate.
-
Community Tennis (Kamperman & Schultz) killed the organization with their “program of the year” experiments. The expensive roll-outs & program material costs were allowed without scrutinizing from the Board. Big checks went out to the Sections & the business changed. Pro Tennis was the cash cow that kept every part of the company alive. The numbers in the Comm Tennis outcomes, even for NJTL, are always questionable because kids are counted every time they walk into a facility. For all of his faults, Tom Fetzer, who Kamperman pushed out, understood the mission of the USTA & made genuine efforts to grow the game as well as expand its reach to minority populations. He was smart, and best of all, he was a Southern gentleman who didn’t just talk about introducing tennis - along with after school & summer programs that included tutoring & mentoring - to underserved populations. Fetzer’s initiative, “First Serve” was getting a lot of traction until Kurt & Scott arrived & scrapped it. If permitted to expand with the help of the USTA Foundation, First Serve would have provided opportunities for more young people to continue their educations & grown the game with these young people & their family members. Tennis would have been the family recreation choice.
-
Too much beauacracy
-
They have destroyed amateur tournament tennis. Also, in a sport in which individual honesty is expected and required for fair competion the NTRP encourages flat out lying and junior tennis and other non officiated matches I. E. High School tennis is rife with cheating
-
zero confidence
-
Run by people who don't love or even play tennis. Bureaucracy that rivals the federal government. A budget that has enormous amount of money devoted to salaries. Get rid of the entire staff and start over. Start hiring people who love and have a background in tennis. Use that US Open money on tennis at grass roots and parks instead . USTA should also be trying to help coaches and those in the business. By helping coaches and those in the tennis business they are actually helping the vitality of tennis. USTA does nothing for coaches/pros.

QUESTION
How confident are you in the leadership and board of directors of the USPTA?

COMMENTS
-
They have lost focus of their mission. Most of the BOD is fine. They need new leadership.
-
the USPTA does NOT listen to it's members.
-
I think the USPTA is the Titanic, and is sinking!
-
Didn't Embry lose is job at Wilson, help bankrupt Penn, help bankrupt Balle de Match, and isn't he now in the process of tanking the USPTA? And why does he feel everyone is so beneath him?
-
Confident of new Board in 2024 - 2026
-
None of the board members of USPTA know anything about coach education, kind of strange when they claim they’re leaders in coach education.
-
I'm not a member of the USPTA.
-
John Embree knows the problems with US Tennis and the shortage of Tennis Professionals. He is working hard to grow tennis and the tennis professional industry and the USPTA.
-
What's up with their Certification accreditation with the USTA.
-
John is great but the effectiveness of the organization is dwindling
-
Too much business oriented and not enough outreach.
-
Lost wilson and accreditation same year
-
Seem to be in disarray. Too much employee turnover.
-
Entitlement on the part of volunteers, particularly on a national level, has been obscene for the past 20 years. Having attended Annual & Semi Annual meetings as a longtime staff member, it was a farce to send invitations to elderly former national board & committee members. Yes, they served the USTA in the past, but thinking that seniors in wheelchairs with portable oxygen would actively participate in meetings (particularly those who’d bring both their spouse & a health care aide) was ludicrous. I’m not anti-Senior but the extensive list of invitees should have been reviewed annually. Too many people feel entitled to travel as well as tickets to the President’s Box at the U.S. Open long after their term of service. It costs the USTA a fortune.
-
Leadership NO Board YES
-
Why not just sell out completely to USTA
-
i think they do a pretty good job overall
-
I like the USPTA. Have been a member a long time but now starting to see that the USPTA is developing an ever-growing interest in pickle ball. Nothing against PB but it's clear they see this as another way to get money. The new "racket sports professional" title is very telling.

QUESTION
How confident are you in the leadership and board of directors of the PTR?

COMMENTS
-
Dan Santorium tries hard and PTR is having an impact.
-
Jockocracy hiring and promoting buddies and inviting friends to speak at events.
-
Board members understand their role and allow staff to follow their direction without micro managing.
-
I Dan does a great job with his vision for PTR
-
They need to retain their independency, and not let the USTA tell them what to do.
-
I'm not a member. I do know that Dan Santorum has a wealth of knowledge.
-
Not a member
-
The board looks good and knowledgeable. I wish they would focus more on tennis.
-
They had a great symposium
-
Too much focus on Pickleball and political posturing
-
PTR IS ALWAYS ON THE CUTTING EDGE OF EDUCATION. We need teaching pros and they are are best
-
Too much of an old boys club that has a small amount of old girls in their ranks. There was a lot of noise over Arlen Kantarian’s salary & his ideas that transformed the US Open. Boy, could they use him & his right-hand person Michelle DiPhilipantonio Wilson now! They packed the seats, got kids interested in the game & made the USTA a FORTUNE! Rick Ferman & Lee Hamilton were very good CEOs who were focused on the mission of the organization. They also were held in high regard by White Plains staff at all levels.
-
At the moment they have their act together better than the others
-
I think PTR has been leader because of Dennis’s vision and insight
-
Not familiar enough to comment but everybody can’t earn one way
-
never had much faith in PTR
-
Same as with the USPTA, I feel like PTR is adding pickleball to what they think a tennis pro should know. Imagine a PGA golf pro having to add miniature golf to his "certification"? Should I keep supporting my own "union" that isn't opposed to the reducing of tennis courts?
