We are allowing anonymous Letters to the Editor because we understand your position and have experienced the viciousness of the USTA responding to dissenting voices ourselves. Please be aware whenever a letter is signed with The Commish it's always a tennis director, a teaching professional, a vendor or a USTA insider who is in fear of retribution. Thank you. We look forward to the day when everyone can voice their opinion freely and without fear.

USTA/CLUBSPARK MESS

March 30, 2021

Rich,

I just read your article.. nice! ,😁

As for what happened in socal jr tennis during the pandemic....

The socal usta shut down all usta tournaments.. for too long. But the UTR tournaments started up right away and the socal kids played them and never stopped playing. Thank God for the utr tournaments..especially in Orange County. The socal usta based in L.A. decided since L.A. was shut down, ALL Counties needed to be shutdown. So some orange county tennis clubs started doing utr tournaments.. especially ttc at Newport Beach...

Hundreds of players every weekend played.

BIG 5 SPORTING GOODS DISCOUNT COUPONS

March 30, 2021

Hi, Rich~

I know you have strong convictions, and stand up for your various battles, so I just wanted to share a little story with you about my fight for the tennis community. I, like many of my friends, had used the Money Mailer/ValPack coupons for Big 5, to get monthly discounts on tennis balls. Within the past year, those coupons suddenly had an “exclusion” note, which included “tennis balls.” Spurred on by a bitchy checkout clerk, I decided to write to Big 5. I complained about the transaction, and also explained that the only reason I ever went to that store was for the tennis balls every month, and that without that, I wouldn’t be likely to end up there and buy anything else.

Lo and behold, I got an immediate reaction from the Tennis Buyer, Robert D. Slack, who apologized, gave me a $25 coupon for anything, and told me that they would change the policy on the coupons. I just confirmed that this month’s coupons no longer exclude tennis balls! How cool is that?

As a nod to good customer service, since you have a newsletter to so many tennis players, I just thought I’d let you know, should you want to alert your readers to the change, just in case they used to use those coupons. It’s nice when you see that making a statement can make a difference.

Be well~

Play well~

USTA/CLUBSPARK MESS

March 30, 2021

Great job once again Mr Neher!

Between you and me, “USTA/Clubspark mess” is an understatement, they’re all buffoons at the USTA and Clubspark was never equipped to build this technology. This is all Craig Morris my friend, he’s the only winner when the USTA lose because they put more stuff under him for the dreams he sells..

USTA/CRAIG MORRIS

March 31, 2021

Rich,

The USTA in Orlando is in such an internal mess (according to insiders both old and new), that every day is a new day with little direction.  Job descriptions change daily and everyone is pointing a finger.  I'm even more convinced that Morris is absolutely the wrong guy...Imprinting Tennis Australia over the USTA was a bad idea.  He's brought nothing creative to the USTA and continues to flush $$$ down the toilet.

USTA/DELOITTE/HEATHER HAWKES

March 31, 2021

Rich,

Spot on and I feel bad for Heather in a way, because she was put into her position, totally unqualified because she knew the tech lingo and no one beneath her new anything about technology.  Kamperman, Smith, amd Morris, who is an admitted tech neophite, so just because she had a project management background, they thought she was qualified.  The USTA is so good at putting people in the wrong positions.  As for Deloitte, what a joke.  I'm sure they leveraged their huge US Open sponsorship agreement to get the job.  Deloitte had no history either, just the money to go out and hire some techies and the contacts to exploit, using their prominent name.  I guess they figured it was time to start earning some of their sponsorship money back.

TENNIS UNITED NEWSLETTER 3-30-2021

Interesting publication...

But- we don't need black appreciation month to celebrate blacks. We don't need need women's appreciation month to celebrate women. We need to celebrate all players at all times and stop putting people in silos.

If we are going that route, when are we going to have snot-nosed juniors who can swear in three languagues Month, cranky old men who can't touch their toes Month, competent industry association Month, 2.5 players who can hit their serves under 30 mph, and the list goes on and on.

I notice that USTA signed their USTA/TIA strategic alliance. Do any of the alliances or partnerships in the tennis industry mean anything? Awwww - Meaningless partnerships of the month.

Finally, USPTA has announced an innovation competition. The notion of innovation and USPTA is something of an oxymoron. Maybe that is a new category to celebrate, "Innovator of the month."

We're going to have to add some new months to the year so we can celebrate everybody.

USTA MIKE DOWSE

April 8, 2021

The tennis industry was lucky to have Dowse in charge.

I think parts of the USTA are still protecting their fiefdoms and don't realize what they have with Dowse.

I am assuming you get this, but just in case…again, note their reference to TV coverage and the big picture of tennis, it is obvious they want to own the information and news concerning tennis.

USTA LEAGUES PROGRAM

April 24, 2021

Some of the things they’re doing don’t make sense to me and could be detrimental to the league program but maybe that’s their intention. It seems like what Michael wants, Michael gets...

USPTA Find-A-Pro Site

April 21, 2021

The USPTA has always had a find a pro site to encourage people from the public to "Find-a-Pro"

 https://usptapro.com/

If you look at the current listings, there are only 1,453 USPTA members.

The Find a Pro database allows people to find a pro from whose nationality is Zimbabwean, but it does not allow people to find a pro who is male, female, black, asian, american indican, hispanic, etc.

This shows the quality of leadership in the USPTA and its true committment to diversity in tennis.

What does the USTA think about this?  Why does the USTA sanction them as a certifier of teaching pros.

USTA'S CRAIG MORRIS

April 21, 2021

Craig has no wins since he arrived, just a contract that apparently is too expensive to get out of.  He has no record of success, just a money spender and I don't know why people feel if you have an Aussie accent you're good to go!  I honestly don't know how he can dig out of anything.  I guess the next play is to hand off all he's done to others to fix, so he can have an out!

USTA TENNISLINK / HEATHER HAWKES

April 21, 2021

There is a lot of banter going around about what a huge mistake the USTA has made to go in the direction they went last time with technology that cost the USTA millions.  They are not a tech company and I'm sorry but Heather Hawkes is way in over her head.  On her behalf, they gave her this opportunity because she knows more than they did about technology, so in their minds she was the person to lead the efforts, even though she was not qualified.  Oh, how history repeats itself.  Yet another major, strategic mistake by the USTA, like Deja Vu all over again.  I feel sorry for Mike Dowse because he inherited a disaster.

DAVIS CUP

April 21, 2021

Rich,

After reading about the attempted New Super League of Soccer today, I wish our worldwide tennis fans would have responded in the same way towards the Davis Cup. I know the new platform only has one year under its belt and the pandemic cancelled 2020, so it’s a small sample size.

If tradition was a major factor in soccer staying in place, how then did tennis allow their team competition to change tradition and format? Davis Cup was founded in 1900 and soccer didn’t exist till decades later.

Rich, this would be a compelling topic to debate in your newsletter since you have a global network. Tennis and soccer are the most widely played sports on the planet, so both industry’s could learn from each other. What’s in the best interest of the game for today’s generation and generations of the future.
