Disrupting Tennis With Non-Linear Instruction
A teaching concept based on science
By Rich Neher
A lot of tennis professionals in the United States have their own unique way of teaching the sport. Many of them have worked with their own individual methods quite successfully and I applaud them for that. Very important on my scale: How many new people did you get into tennis and were they staying in or dropping out?
Every once in a while you see a tennis teaching methodology that is seen as a disruptor. Oxford Languages defines a disruptor in business as "a company or form of technology that causes a radical change in an existing industry or market by means of innovation." Fidelity.com writes, "These can entail innovative technologies or operations that are more efficient or make obsolete the old way of doing business—cloud computing, mobile payments, and autonomous driving to name a few."
As an organization and a culture, I view UTR as a much-needed disruptor and game-changer in the tennis ecosystem. As products, I see the Billie Jean King Eye Coach and Mats Wilander's Neuro Tennis wearable to disrupt their market segments.
Now, in the area of teaching and coaching tennis, there's really not much disrupting going on - until now. I know Jack Broudy for almost a decade now and I dare to say his Non-Linear Tennis System is another game-changer. Ever since I got my first "Figure 8 Board" from him, I became a fan. The newly designed Broudy Board looks gorgeous!
Medical sites sell the 8-Board for improvement of core balance. Golf sites sell it to improve your swing. I use it daily for both. Watch Jack explain throwing motion and 45-degree angle principle in this 2010 video.
LEARN TO LOVE THE WAY YOU PLAY
Broudy's mantra "Learn to love the way you play" is interesting because its premise is that many players don't love the way they play. In the last 20+ years, I have played with and organized tennis for thousands of adult and senior players in Southern California. To tell you the truth, I agree with Jack. But why are so many players not in love with the way they play? In my experience, it's because they don't have the right fundamentals. Their movements are awkward, they react late and don't anticipate well because they constantly think too much about their (often flawed) strokes.
Core parts of Jack Broudy's Non-Linear Tennis System are 3 fundamentals that would help most of those players in regards to movement, anticipation, and strokes.
THE CORE FUNDAMENTALS OF NON-LINEAR TENNIS
The core fundamentals are based on three principles:
It's an amazing experience watching Jack explain the fundamentals and everything makes so much sense. He put this booklet on his website that can be downloaded for free. It's a great introduction of Non-Linear Tennis.
"On the court, as in life, your body is intended to move symmetrically in balanced motion," Broudy says. The combination of those three fundamentals, applied to every stroke, strategy, and drill, enables a player to move and hit in a very harmonic, balanced way.

WHY TENNIS PROFESSIONALS SHOULD BE CERTIFIED IN JACK BROUDY'S NON-LINEAR SYSTEM
Jack Broudy says, "The Broudy Tennis System fundamentally changes the way tennis is understood, taught, and played by establishing “The Core Fundamentals of The Non-Linear Game” as the place to start or master. At our Non-Linear Tennis Academy, we certify the world’s best instructors and give them a complete and unique footprint to step into that will separate them from the other instructors and online video courses. Non-Linear tennis is fluid, powerful, accurate, and effortless. You’ve never seen anything like this. When you see it, and teach it, you won’t go back to teaching or playing the way you have been."
On May 1-2, Jack is holding the first training/certification event at the Inverness Country Club Tennis Center in Birmingham, AL, for instructors and players. It’s a two-day on court training using the signature Broudy training tools. If you would like more information about this topic or event, please visit their website www.BroudyTennis.com.
This course is designed to certify affiliate instructors to teach the Broudy Tennis System on the Core Fundamentals of Non-Linear Tennis. You will also learn how to earn additional revenues with your members and Jack's system.
Important Note for USPTA Instructors: If you are a member of the USPTA you can attend the Saturday morning session for free and it will qualify for (4) hours of USPTA CEs.
